Our icon writing workshop has been created with the aim of reviving Old Russian spiritual art traditions.
We try to study and follow the old traditions (no later than the 16th century) of Russian Orthodox canonical icon writing. Our workshop has brought together Orthodox parishoners, professional iconographers and qualified restorers.
At our workshop you can choose ready icons or make a special order as well as study iconography and receive instruction in icon writing.
Iconographic canons and traditions have been passed on from generation to generation for over 1500 years.
Icons are written on a wood panel (usually lime or cypress). First linen is glued to the panel using special glue and the chalk base is made. Then coats of paint are added in strict order. All paints are hand-made from natural mineral pigments (turquoise, schungite, lapis-lazuli, malachite, etc). Gold leaf is applied. Finally the icon is varnished. After the calligraphic inscription is made the icon receives the grace of the foretype and is consecrated in Church.
Our workshop accepts orders for
- Church, family and personal (birth or baptismal gifts) icons of any size and whole iconostasis.
It takes about 3 or 4 weeks to write a home-size icon.
We are ready to help you choose the correct image for your icon.
